As I get older I listen to more and more country music. I still love classic rock but there is not too much new music that catches my attention other than country. I am all about the words and country music not only has great lyrics but you can actually understand them. So today’s Thursday 13 is some of my all-time favorite SAD country songs. But I warn you: If you listen to the songs I have listed, do not have any sharp objects or firearms within reach. Some of these will rip your heart right out of your chest. I am not sure why, but these songs make me feel good. Maybe it is because I know that no matter how bad my day is going, my life is much better than the poor bastard that wrote these lyrics. There are many to pick from. I picked the first 13 that came to mind. They are in no particular order. I am listing the singer of the version I like best regardless of who wrote it. Pause my automatic music and have a listen.
1. Hurt – Johnny Cash
2. Concrete Angel – Martina McBride
3. Sunday Morning Coming Down – Johnny Cash & Kris Kristofferson
4. Whiskey Lullaby – Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss
5. He Stopped Loving Her Today – George Jones
6. I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Hank Williams
7. How’s The World Treating You – James Taylor & Alison Krauss
8. Paint Me a Birmingham – Tracy Lawrence
9. Love Me – Colin Raye
10. Don't Close Your Eyes - Keith Whitley
11. A Bad Goodbye – Clint Black & Wynonna Judd
Clint Black & Wynonna A Bad Goodbye
12. The Dance – Garth Brooks
13. Do You Believe Me Now – Vern Gosdin

There are some great songs here. Like you, I love classic rock and blues. I do like some country as well. I turned to Southern Gospel for some great music. The lyrics are great and the message is wonderful.
Have a great TT
Love me makes me cry every single time I hear it. I always think of my grandma... Happy TT
Hurt is definately one of the best sad songs ever! A wonderful note for him to go out on. I have a new appreciation for Johnny since my son-in-law has been blasting his songs in my home for the last five years! I enjoy a very diverse spectrum of music, Indy is for the moment closest to my heart. But I love the classics too including Willy and Waylon, Dylan, the Beatles. This home has such a broad array of music of all genres and we appreciate each others tastes, which for the most part are similar! I love the art accompanying the one video! Fun post!
Since I'm a HUGE country music fan, I love every song on this list! :) Great job.
Happy TT!
Country definitely does the tear jerkers, that's for sure! I remember He Stopped Loving Her Today and I'm so Lonely I could cry from growing up, my mom listened to country. I hadn't heard Concrete Angel yet, but got all teary watching it!
Thanks for the visit, and Happy TT!
country is not my cup of tea rick as you well know... BUT the few I do know on your list ARE amazing songs! My Crazzzy 'noise' musician son listens to a lot of Johnny Cash, I will have to borrow his cds! (my husband is napping nearby so I can't sample these songs right now, maybe tomorrow)
I know exactly what you mean Rick... sometimes the saddest songs can make us feel better!
GREAT idea for TT my friend! ♥
I haven't heard of any of those. I stopped listening to country when we moved out of my grandmothers house.
If you listen to the words and don't get caught up with the twang of some of the music, you will love these songs. Amazing lyrics.
Definitely some classics there!
I love "The Dance"!
Thanks for stopping by mine :)
I know and like a handful of those songs, but mostly, it's not my preference.
I LOVE Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. It's not a country song, but it's a thousand times better and more believable in his hands than it ever was in Nine Inch Nails'!
I haven't heard He Stopped Loving her Today in years! Too sad. And Love Me, I turn off, too sad. The Dance is a great one. And the Clint/Wynona song. What about Don't Take the Girl? That gets me every time.
I remember the first time I heard He Stopped Loving Her Today; I cried.
You have some really sad songs on your list and I love them all.
Sorry I don't even listen to country for Jesus :)
Miss Rose
Good choices, however, I do disagree with you on
"The Dance". I don't think that "The Dance" is a sad song, at all. It does talk about things we have lost in our lives, but in turn, reminds us that in order for us to have felt that pain, we would have had to felt a lot of joy or we wouldn't even have been able to have felt that pain. I think a better choice would have been, " Alyssa Lies"
