Thursday 13 - Favorite Movie Franchises - 5/22/08

My initial list had about 40 just off the top of my head, so I had to whittle down. I restricted the list to franchises that consisted of at least three films. That eliminated such favorites of mine as: Grumpy Old Men, Arthur, Clerks, Wayne's World, Ace Ventura, Bill and Ted, Meet the Parents, and Men in Black. Then I had to trim more so I reluctantly lost Superman (Christopher Reeves versions), Rocky, National Lampoon, Star Wars, Rush Hour, Star Trek, Alien, Oh God, James Bond (Sean Connery only), X-men, Death Wish, The Matrix, Austin Powers, Shrek, Oceans 11, Mission Impossible, and Batman (too many Batmen). So I ended up by choosing the ones I would want to watch right now. My favorite movie franchises in no particular order:

1. Monty Python – One of the greatest comedy ensembles ever. They made several great movies. My kind of humor.
2. The Terminator – Classic Arnold Schwarzenegger. Great story line.
3. Die Hard – John McClane is one of the best action movie characters ever developed. Just enough smart-ass for my liking.
4. Lethal Weapon – Characters much more important than plot. Joe Pesci was great.
5. Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns – Loved them all. My favorite cowboy ever.
6. Dirty Harry – Some of the most memorable quotes ever: “Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” Pretty obvious I love Clint Eastwood movies.
7. Back to the Future – Fun movies, Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, no better character actor.
8. The Godfather – Amazing story, paved the way for the Sopranos.
9. Pirates of the Caribbean – Johnny Depp might be the best actor on the planet. He can make anything watchable.
10. Harry Potter – Captivating stories overshadow horrible child actors.
11. Lord of the Rings – My favorite story ever brought to life with fantastic on-location scenery.
12. Indiana Jones – Most unlikely action hero ever. Can’t wait for the new one to open.
13. Jack Ryan Movies – Written by Tom Clancy. Patriot Games, Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears. Harrison Ford was my favorite Jack Ryan.

I would like to hear yours.

I think I would leave your list pretty much intact except I'd drop the Godfather and add Star Wars, and replace Spaghetti Westerns with the Spaghetti Sci-fi franchise that had "Wild Wild Planet", "The War of the Planets" and "The Blue Devils". What? no "Police Academy" or "Leprechaun"? :-) BTW "Rush Hour" now has three films!

Some great movies there. Although I'm not a Harry Potter fan.
The Python movies were certainly great, and Life Of Brian was only finally made when Beatle, George Harrison, stepped in to produce it.
He went on to produce some great films.

I would have included Stars Wars if I could have just included the classic three and not the very inferior preqels. I could not make myself include Police Academy as once it got to episode 10 or so, it wasn't working. I have never heard of the Spaghetti Sci-fi movies, but as I love Sci-fi I may have to look into them. I had also never heard of Leprechaun.

My favorite franchise on your list is the "Indiana Jones" films. Another franchise that I think is excellent is the "Naked Gun" series of films starring Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley. Going old school, I also enjoyed the four "Nancy Drew" movies made in the late 30s.

As a heads up, there are three movies in the "Oh, God" franchise:

Oh, God!
Oh, God! Book II
Oh, God! You Devil

this was a smart idea for a TT. Believe it or not, I've never enjoyed the Monty Python films! although, I haven't tried one since I was very young. I should probably give one a chance since it's been so long. I LoVEd terminator 1 &2, didn't care for 3. Loved the die hards and Indiana Jones! Also, can't wait to see the next.
Johnny Depp IS VErY VERY watchable! Just saw Sweeny Todd and although it was too gory for my taste.. He was as always... VERY VErY watchable! :))

I like several of those! Monty Python helped get me through a very tough year at college, I lived for that hour in between classes every day that it played on Comedy Central. I think that solidified me as a fan more than anything, and I ended up buying the DVD's of the series. Love those guys! John Cleese is my favorite, but they're all good!

And it's just funny to hear a guy saying that Johnny Depp can make any film watchable! I like him too though, so I'm not complainin'! ;)

Happy Thursday!

Johnny Depp is a great actor. I am confident enough in my sexuality to say that.

I LOVE the Monty Python movies; the shows were great too. Just read the Michael Palin diaries. They are a must for any Python head.
Harry Potter movies are not as good as the books, but how do you condense 900 pages into a two hour movie?
I want to hate the Die Hard movies, but I really enjoy them.
Bruce Willis does a nice job.
