Sunday Scribblings - Art - 2/6/09

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the prompt “ART” was a line from a Bare Naked Ladies song:

If I had $1000000
I’d buy you some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkel)

After that initial stream of consciousness, I thought about this very broad and general word. Any activity can actually be considered an art form. A doctor is involved in the healing arts. Throwing a football accurately and in a tight spiral is a work of art, as is catching it. The concept of art is too complex for me to get my feeble mind around.

Art is very personal and, like beauty, is definitely in the eye of the beholder. When I seriously considered what the word art meant to me, only one image appeared in my mind’s eye. To me, the most amazing painting ever to touch canvas. I realize that you all know that it was painted by a tortured soul. When considering posting this painting here, I knew I would be remiss to not include the beautiful song that it inspired. They go together magnificently.

I have included 3 versions of this song here in case someone should spend more time scrolling down my blog looking for brilliance. It should take about that long to realize there is none to be found.

I am like you I believe art is in the eye of the beholder.
The painting is truly magnificent and I love that you added the music. I listened to all three.

Nice post.

I love Starry Night too. My daughter once created a rendition of it for an art class. I framed it and hung it up at work. I love it both because it was her artwork, but also because of the beauty that is in the original.

Here I wanted to post some boneheaded wiseass comment for you today, and you go and post something so great! Thanks for giving me NOTHING to go by. teehee!

Nice music too. :)

I guess what I enjoy most about this painting is that it could never have been painted by a happy man. There is turbulence and turmoil. This work came straight from the darkest depths of his soul, yet is so beautiful. Don't worry Michelle, there will be lots for you to wiseass to death.

Oh... the synchronicity... Don't know if you've read my post, but I use that same image, because it was surely the highlight for me of the recent museum visits that I describe! As for the music... sublime. Thanks for this.

I have just written a poem centred on Van Gogh. You might be interested to read it. Your new grandchild looks ready to take on the world!

Fascinating that so many thought of Van Gogh for this prompt. Maybe it's the whole artist as tortured soul thing.

Thanks for the music. I like the Don McLean version. It feels the most pure and unadulterated.

Oh boy..that's funny. My dentist made the remark "ya know..pulling teeth..to me, it's like an art"!! He gets everything- no chips or fragments left that need to be surgically removed!!Ha- Beautiful painting w/song- I thought I had that one on a coffee cup. Thanks for stopping by-

Van Gogh certainly was a painer of many different styles. Stary Night is so different for instance from his Almond Branches which looks almost Japanese. I have a print of his Cafe Terrace painting and when I look at that I just have to pour myself a glass of wine and unwind!

Although "Starry Night" is so popular as to have become almost cliche, I can't stop liking it.

Yes, art is personal, but sometimes it speaks to many, and for a variety of reasons. Great art is like that--we can each take away what we need.

The music is amazing- I loved listening to it as I read here. This is a great painting, there's no doubt there. I think it's so cool that it gets so many people talking too...

Often, it's the people in turmoil who are the most interesting souls of all. Unfortunately they're often dismissed before people get to realize that.

I love the words that you ended your post with though. I love that you laugh at yourself! It made me laugh too. Great words, great post!

And thanks for visiting mine. I'm going to have to blog roll you or I'll be mad at myself tomorrow when I loose my way back here- I'm hopeless without a road map.

Bella :)

That song is among my favorites! Thanks for including it with the Van Gogh! I would still be listening to it had it not cut off when I went to this comment. Now I'll get back to it!

I agree, there is art all around us, in nature, in us humans, and in all the activities we all engage in. I have a print of that painting too..beautiful indeed.
