Sunday Scribblings - "Trust" - 2/20/09

This week's Sunday Scribbling prompt is "trust". The latest peanut butter crisis has caused me to reflect on the risks we take in our everyday life. The thousands of people, mostly strangers, to which we entrust our lives and those of our family every day. Among millions of risks we take without realizing, we are trusting that:

The person piloting the aircraft we are riding in hasn’t just lost the will to live.

Our pharmacist can really read the physician’s writing and doesn’t confuse oxybutynin and oxycontin.

The guy driving the oncoming vehicle is awake and sober.

The kid assembling our burger didn’t just digitally master himself or his girlfriend prior to handling OUR meat.

The fish we are about to eat was not caught in highly contaminated waters. Was transported properly and in a timely manner. Was not handled by anyone with hepatitis of any letter.

Our elected leaders aren’t selling us out to socialism and foreign domination.

The person living in the condo next to us will not get drunk and fall asleep with a lit cigarette.

Our doctor paid attention in medical school.

Our partner hasn't just had a dalliance with someone infected with an STD.

The nice baseball coach, priest, teacher, childcare provider, scout leader, (fill in the blank) isn't a pedophile.

The Arab cab driver we are sitting behind doesn't have a dirty bomb in the trunk.

ENJOY YOUR LUNCH TODAY

So scary who we trust everyday. Especially children. I think adults are a little more jaded and assume it is not safe to trust most things. Thanks for giving me another reason not to eat seafood or fish. Love ya Carly

You certainly have given us some things to think about.
I worry every time I stay at a motel if the room was really cleaned. And I never send food back at a restuarant for fear of what might happen to it before it comes back to me.
Thanks for giving me more to worry about.....lol

That's me finished with burgers and fish for a while! I'm not going to think too much about the other things.

As both the daughter and the sister of pharmacists, and having worked as a pharmacy tech for many years,I have to say that any good pharmacist will call your doctor to check. I love the phrase "digitally mastered". I may need to steal it.
I have another sister who drive herself crazy worrying about this kind of stuff when her kids were younger. She was especially terrified of AIDS. I had to get blood after my youngest daughter was born. She's 16 , and I still haven't told my sister!

I don't think we are talking about a good pharmacist here. There are also probably people that wash their hands before they toss our salad. But do we know that?

Yep, it's true.....but unless you plan to plant a garden, butcher your homegrown critter, be a stay at home parent and abstain from any kind of physical contact thinking like this will just make a person OCD. Everything is a risk, and gets riskier everyday. We trust partners, pastors, Presidents and pizza makers everyday. The saddest part of all this is that those you trust are by far the most likely to bring alot of what you talk about into your life. co

My problem is that I trust everyone. Crazy I know, and sometimes people have taken advantage of it. But you can trust me!Honestly!

What a wonderful list of things that it would be too uncomfortable NOT to trust.

All good points - who can we trust?
Good and bad in everyone - we hope for the good, and usually get what we hope for.

I have thought as much many, many times. We just blindly trust and really don't have much choice about many things.

I trust this finds you well. D

It's scary to think about, isn't it? I have to put it all out of my mind or I'd never leave the house...

The larger point to all this is that we live in a highly complex society with such a high degree of specialization that we have little choice but to trust each other. At the same time, there are so many of us that we've lost the sense of community that used to give us a better sense of who we could and couldn't trust. Quite the conundrum.

Trust me your post is the exact reason why I've missed Sunday Scribs and YOU ;) Excellent!

It's impossible to go through life without some amount of trust, but not all of that trust is deserved.

I'm from Illinois, and we don't so much worry about our elected officials selling out to foreign governments. We know that political office here is available to the highest bidder.

Faith in my fellow man (and woman). That's the only way we make it through the day unscathed.

OMG - what food for thought! Taking trust from that point of view makes me realize our nation as a whole trust waaaaaay too much!

Great job!

It seems Illinois has become the synonym for corruption.

I guess we have to nibble on the edges of trust and hope for the best... We know so much and yet so little. Good post!
