Thursday Thirteen - #1 - 2/14/08

The topic today was Valentine's Day, but the first thing that comes to mind is my love of music. Though I have no musical talent, music is an instrumental (no pun intended) part of my life. As could probably be expected, the lyrics are much more important to me than the genre of music. I have included some song lyrics that speak to me. I think these probably tell more about me than what I actually write myself. Some are just a line from a song and some I found it necessary to include the entire song, as it was worthy. Here are 13 that come to mind, oh no it is 26. My bad. Once I got started, I couldn't trim it. You are lucky there are not 52. You will note that I generally include pictures with my posts. I can't do that here. It would only detract. The pictures are in the words.

1. I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me

Guaranteed, Eddie Vetter

2. We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

Same Auld Lang Syne Dan Fogelberg

3. 'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down.

Sunday Morning Coming Down – Kris Kristofferson

4 Can you colorize my life, I'm so sick of black and white?

I’d Do Anything for Love Meatloaf

5. The summers and winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away

He Went To Paris – Jimmy Buffett

6. Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the
dance
The Dance – Garth Brooks

7. He said drifter can you make folks cry when you play and Sing
Have you paid your dues?
Can you moan the blues?
Can you bend them guitar strings?
He said boy can you make folks feel what you feel inside?
Cause if your big star bound let me warn you it's a long hard ride

The Ride – David Allan Coe

9. A smile seemed to come to her slowly,
It was a sad smile, just the same.
And she said, "How are you Harry?"
I said, "How are you Sue?
Through the too many miles
and the too little smiles
I still remember you."
It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.

Taxi – Harry Chapin

10. I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a sun
In somebody else's sky

Black – Pearl Jam

11. Hear the lonesome whiperwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I’m so lonesome I could cry

I’ve never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means hes lost the will to live
I’m so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I’m so lonesome I could cry

I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Hank Williams

12. So when you look at me
you better look hard and
look twice:
Is that me
baby
or just a brilliant disguise?

Brilliant Disguise – Bruce Springsteen

13. I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Cant make it all alone
I’ve built my dreams around you

Fairy Tale Of New York – The Pogues

14. Theres a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me

Sweet Baby James – James Taylor

15. one light, one mind
flashing in the dark
blinded by silence of a thousand broken hearts

Minority – Green Day

16. He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

He Stopped Loving Her Today – George Jones

17. hows it going might be what id say
you broke my heart you know
or it looks like rain today
or maybe god i missed you since you went away
your lookin well
or go to hell might be what id say

What I’d Say – Earl Thomas Conley

18. You are like a hurricane
Theres calm in your eye.
And Im gettin blown away

Like a Hurricane – Neil Young

19. And them that don't know him won't like him
And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
He ain't wrong he's just different
but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love

Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys – Willie Nelson

20. Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose.
Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free.

Me and Bobby McGee – Kris Kristofferson

21. I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
Sinners are much more fun.

Only the Good Die Young – Billy Joel

22. I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all.

Both Sides Now – Joni Mitchell

23. There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed.
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living,
In my life I've loved them all.

In My Life – The Beatles

24. You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

You can’t Always Get What You Want – Rolling Stones

25. See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans,
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams,
Which he spent like they was goin' outa style
And he keeps right on a'changin' for the better or the worse,
Searchin' for a shrine he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse,
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.

He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from his devils, Lord, and reachin' for the stars,
And losin' all he's loved along the way
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse,
And all he ever gets is older and around
From the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse,
The goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
There's a lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home.

Pilgrim – Kris Kristofferson

26. I feel stupid, and contagious

Feels Like Teen Spirit – Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

I haven't thought of some of those songs in ages, like Hank Williams and George Jones. Great list.

When I decided to make this my Valentine post, it was impossible to limit it to 13, so I doubled it. "In My Life" would have been on my list even if it was a top 5.

I always think that songs seem to pack so much punch when they're written well. Like really little novels.

Great list. We're in the same boat. I love music, but I have no gift for it.
Hank Williams, Garth Brooks, Harry Chapin...great picks.

Have a great TT and welcome to the crowd.
